The fast bowler of the England cricket team, Stuart Meaker, has expressed his delight over the fact that he will be playing under two great captains i.e. Graeme Smith and Ricky Ponting at Surrey in the ongoing County season.
Smith has already joined the Surrey squad and he will be leading the side in their first game this season against Somerset.
Smith will go to play for South Africa in the Champions Trophy in June and in his absence, Ponting will join the Surrey squad.
When asked how he is feeling about playing under two great captains, Meaker said, “I never thought that I would be playing under the skippers like Graeme Smith and Ricky Ponting one day. It’s really amazing. I am thrilled.”
“Every player wants to play alongside the greats of the game and these two are certainly the greats. Ricky led Australia to so many victories during his time and Graeme has done the same for South Africa.”
When asked about the chances of Surrey in this season, Meaker said, “Look, we have got a very strong squad this time around. Apart from Graeme, we have got Chris Tremlett back and also, Jade Dernbach who has been terrific for England in limited overs cricket in the last one year or so.”
“Also, the club has signed Gary Keedy and Vikram Solanki who are the superstars in domestic cricket. So, the composition of the side is certainly a lot better than the last season. Hopefully, this will reflect in our performance as well.”
Meaker was a part of the England squad in all the three formats on the tour of India, but, for the New Zealand tour, he was included only in the T20 squad.
He has been included in England’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy but, his chances of being selected in the final squad are not looking good as England would want to go into that tournament with all the experienced bowlers.
